LHC present: TETSUO: THE IRON MAN
We invite you to a screening of the 1989 cyberpunk cult classic, TETSUO:THE IRON MAN.
“A metal fetishist (Shin’ya Tsukamoto), driven mad by the maggots wriggling in the wound he’s made to embed metal into his flesh, runs out into the night and is accidentally run down by a Japanese businessman (Tomorowo Taguchi) and his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara). The pair dispose of the corpse in hopes of quietly moving on with their lives. However, the businessman soon finds that he is now plagued by a vicious curse that transforms his flesh into iron.”
Tetsuo was written, produced, edited, and directed by cult-film director Shin’ya Tsukamoto, and produced by Japan Home Video. It is shot in the same low-budget, underground-production style as his first two films. Tetsuo established Tsukamoto internationally and created his worldwide cult following. It was followed by the sequels Body Hammer (1992) and The Bullet Man (2009).
Our Tetsuo screening is part of his years Scalarama Filmfest which is held across the country during the entire month of September. This year’s theme is Identity.
We are incredibly lucky to have a dedicated Scalarama team in Liverpool and they have a full month of awesome film experiences lined up with a movie screening pretty much every single day during September! You can find out more on the Scalarama website [link].
Not only will we be screening the movie, but there’ll also be a special prerecorded introduction by director Shin’ya Tsukamoto himself.
We shall also show a number of short film and animations linked to Scalarama’s theme of Identity and some of the ideas explored in Testuo. Expect things to get weird, unsettling, and more than a little bit bizzaro!
Our host for the night is No Face Tattoo Studio, based on the 2nd floor of The Tapestry building off London Road. (We most recently hosted A Dark Song in this gorgeous space.)
The studio is wonderful, full of artwork and paraphernalia heavily flavoured with occult and horrific vibes. No Face Tattoo will have some of their fantastic artwork and merch available for sale. If you really enjoy the style, you’ll also be able to book a tattoo appointment with them!
The super talented Ilan Sheady of Uncle Frank Productions has created an awesome movie poster especially for our screening. All event attendees will receive an A3 copy of the artwork absolutely free, which will make a boss addition to your growing collection of LHC art.
