HORROR IS NO PLACE FOR A LADY
Horror is misogynistic, exploitative, violent, and considered far too extreme for the fairer sex. In horror movies, there are only 4 roles for women: psycho, virgin, victim or whore.
Horror is affirmative, brimming with strong positive female role-models and is a leading light in gender equality. In horror movies: the last man standing is inevitably a woman, a Final Girl who is the only person able to save the day when all hope is lost.
We invite you to join us as we challenge and discuss this dichotomy in the darkest and most beguiling of genres. We will showcase artists, performers, filmmakers and other creatives. We’ll hear the views and insights of industry experts as they dissect both sides of the argument in order to better understand the role of the alleged tender gender: Women In Horror.
We’ll begin the month with an art exhibition, ‘A Celebration of Women In Horror’ which will be on display from 2nd February – 17th Feb at our wonderful venue, Constellations. This exhibition features the work of 20+ artists. The majority of pieces are from Liverpool-based artists, but we are also displaying submissions from Manchester, North Wales, Leeds, and even Berlin & Frankfurt!
Saturday 9th Feb will be our first event in celebration of Women In Horror month.
SHOW & TELL
In this showcase section, we shall hear from local women working in various facets of the horror genre.
Amber Shorrock (special makeup FX artist/ propmaker)
Amy Roberts (writer/ poet/ musician/ blood-soaked go-go dancer)

‘HORROR IS NO PLACE FOR A LADY’
Our keystone talk for the evening will be an in-depth panel discussion. The conversation will tackle the idea that horror is misogynistic and exploitative, yet has lead the field on gender equality and positive female role-models for a long time.
Hosted by Mariam Draeger (Head-Cinema Productions), this panel will feature industry experts who will bring their own views, insights and subject matter to the table. Our guests include…
Amanda Follit (Exec & management of business operating in digital, music & events)
Simret Cheema-Innis (Writer/ director/ cinematographer/ blogger)
Rebecca Howard (Marketing executive at Arrow Films)
Michaela Longden (Actress: Book of Monsters)
The evening will draw to close with a screening of Mary Harron’s fantastic adaptation of American Psycho (2000). Everyone who attends our movie screenings receives a free A3 event poster. Check out the fab poster in the photo gallery. Attendees will receive the non-bloody poster – and will then be invited into our gorezone so they may splatter, slap and smear blood all over their own poster to create a unique souvenir of the night!
Following the film, we’ll enjoy further hospitality in our fab venue, Constellations. The bar will be open and tunes will be playing. This will be a great opportunity to socialise & network with other attendees, and chat about the points raised during the day.
